Decatur Homes For Sale and Local City Information (continued)

community-minded citizens, this is a city with the feel of a small town neighborhood, where trendy eateries and entertainment options mix in the shadow of a proud old courthouse.

Today’s Decatur Real Estate Market

Decatur is situated ITP (inside the perimeter) in DeKalb County.  The population of 19,555 enjoys an average household income of $71,050 and a work commute of just 23 minutes.  Access to downtown Atlanta and Hartsfield-Jackson airport is no problem; there are three MARTA (Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority) stations that serve Decatur, and interstates I-85 and I-285 are close by.  This city is also home to Emory University, Emory Hospital, and Dekalb Hospital.

Decatur’s residents are among the most active people in the state when it comes to sharing in the public life of their town.  The city buzzes with festivals and community events, including concerts in the square, art festivals, and other celebrations.  The strong pro-local spirit is reflected in the “Keep It Indie-Catur” campaign, a reminder to eat and shop in Decatur’s city limits.  Not that that’s a hardship; there are plenty of options to keep the most adventurous consumer satisfied.

Decatur History

Decatur officially came into being in 1822, when it was founded on the crossroads of two old trails in Indian Country.  Residents later passed on the opportunity to become a terminus for the railway.  That honor went a few miles south to Atlanta.  Because of its proximity to Atlanta and its strategic location in the supply chain, Decatur also played an important part in the Civil War. The city was named after Captain Stephen Decatur, a hero of the American Revolution.
