Duluth is situated OTP (outside the perimeter) in Gwinnett County, one of the northeastern sections of the Metro Atlanta region. Its 27,258 citizens enjoy a median household income of about $60,000. Downtown Atlanta is less than 25 miles to the south, and road travel is largely via Interstate 85. Highway 120 serves as the main connecting road from Duluth to the Interstate. Thanks to this easy access system, residents report an average work commute of under half an hour.
Historic downtown Duluth offers a park, a great mix of artist shops, frequent community festivals, and restaurants that prepare almost every kind of cuisine, from Caribbean to Korean.
The Duluth area was originally settled in the early 1800s. The town’s original name, Howell’s Crossing, reflected its importance as a crossroads. The name changed to Duluth in 1873, following the 1871 advent of a railroad that terminated in the Duluth, Minnesota. (Interesting fact: Both Duluths were named in honor of French explorer Daniel du Lhut, also known as Daniel Duluth.)
Duluth’s seal celebrates its past, with a steam engine reflecting the strong influence of rail travel and the flags commemorating war veterans. The city’s motto, ‘Pride in Old and New’, also appears.
