Acworth History
The downtown area of Acworth is split by Western & Atlantic Railroad tracks. How did Acworth get its name? In 1842, the area’s railroad stop was the first place rail workers could take on water for the trains. Struck by the natural beauty of the area, a railway engineer suggested it be named for his hometown of Acworth, Connecticut. The name stuck.
There’s history aplenty in the Acworth area. You can visit a restored Victorian Mansion or an actual fossil digging site; nearby you’ll find a railroad museum, a Western art museum, and Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park, the site of one of the key battles of the Civil War.
Acworth’s quaint downtown area has recently enjoyed a rejuvenation. It now offers a wonderful array of shops and restaurants to complement the town’s lovely storefront architecture and the natural appeal of its setting. All of this is surrounded by two stunning landmarks: the rolling foothills of the Northern Georgia Mountains and the shores of two lakes. Like this combination of soil and water, Acworth brings some interesting contrasts together.
