Duluth History
The Duluth area was originally settled in the early 1800s. The town’s original name, Howell’s Crossing, reflected its importance as a crossroads. The name changed to Duluth in 1873, following the 1871 advent of a railroad that terminated in the Duluth, Minnesota. (Interesting fact: Both Duluths were named in honor of French explorer Daniel du Lhut, also known as Daniel Duluth.)
Duluth’s seal celebrates its past, with a steam engine reflecting the strong influence of rail travel and the flags commemorating war veterans. The city’s motto, ‘Pride in Old and New’, also appears.
