Roswell Homes for Sale (cont.)

This is especially in evidence by the area around Canton Street in the historic part of Roswell.  A casual walk down Canton Street is an wonderful assault on the senses.  Dozens of thriving restaurants offer every type of gustatory experience, from a casual meal at a small street-side table to haute multi-course menus in elegant dining rooms.

Like their neighbors in Sandy Springs and Marietta, Roswell residents enjoy a mix of cultural activities, outdoor recreation, and a landscape that is enticingly hilly and green.  This has made Roswell especially bike-friendly.  In fact, Roswell is officially Bike Friendly, according to the League of American Bicyclists.  Avid bikers will enjoy the miles of mountain biking trails that crisscross the city’s 900 acres of parkland.

But Roswell isn’t merely a place to bike and enjoy the outdoors, nor is it dependant on Atlanta for fine restaurants, live musical entertainment, theater, and dance.  As Georgia’s 8th-largest city in its own right, Roswell is home to theater companies, dance schools, and many musical venues.  It’s also a historical site, with links to the Civil War and its own plantation homes for amateur historians to treasure.

Roswell’s History

Roswell is named after Roswell King of Darien, Goergia, but its history extends much further down the stream of time.  Long before any European presence, the Cherokees had claimed the area around Roswell as a special place.  These northern banks of the Chattahoochie River gave rise to its Cherokee name - “Enchanted Land”.  Eventually, though, the Cherokee people were forced out of the area.

In 1828, Georgia experienced its own gold rush, and the area around current-day Roswell was scouted for its potential.  While gold was found lacking, the site was favourable for industry: by 1839, the Roswell Manufacuring Company was founded, and Roswell became known for its cotton and flour mills.  These mills were destroyed in the Civil War, but fortunately the elegant homes were not.  The mills were later rebuilt, and milling was an important industry into the mid-20th century.
